CRUELLA

Emma Stone is a punk rock villain “born brilliant, born bad, and a little bit mad” in the glamorous trailer for Disney’s live-action prequel to 101 Dalmatians.

Things we didn’t anticipate when we woke up this Wednesday: a sudden thirst for two-tone monochrome hair for spring (we anticipate TikTok to be all over this one), and secondly, being all over Emma Stone with a British accent. Thankfully, we got both rolled into one glamorous film bundle, as Disney has dropped the first trailer for Cruella – the live-action prequel to 101 Dalmatians – following the rise of Disney’s most edgy villain (is it normal to still have photos of Glenn Close all over our Pinterest boards?)

Emma Stone steps into the shoes of the fur-crazed icon in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, as we see a young Cruella de Vil (at the time, named Estella) coming of age, eventually entering the path that will one day lead her to steal what we can only deem as a titanic quantity of Dalmatian puppies. The official synopsis details: “one day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute… but their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella.”

Hunger Games-esque flame transformation dresses, heart-racing motorbike escapes, growling Dalmatians (they knew), and Emma Stone in some rollicking leather outfits also speckle the explosive trailer, which serves up major Birds of Prey vibes, as she tells us: “The thing is, I was born brilliant. Born bad — and a little bit mad.”

The film also stars Emma Thompson as the Baroness (the head of a fashion house where Cruella first gets a job), as well as Paul Walter Hauser and Joel Fry as Cruella’s henchmen Horace and Jasper.

Cruella is scheduled for release on May 28, 2021.
