Let’s be real, the biopic for David Bowie and Nina Simone didn’t hit like we thought it would, so we’re putting all our faith into Baz Luhrmann for his adaptation on Elvis Presley. Casting Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’s Austin Butler as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, the untitled biopic is set to trace the musician’s career from his explosive debut to his untimely death – with a focus on his more than rocky relationship with manager Col. Tom Parker (Tom Hanks).

With principal photography starting last year January in Australia, before being halted due to Hanks and wife Rita Wilson testing positive for COVID, the film is still in production with Olivia DeJonge set to play Pricilla Presley and Alton Mason reportedly playing the iconic innovator and architect of rock and roll, Little Richard. Maggie Gyllenhaal and Rufus Sewell are also on-board for the film, and are set to play his Presely’s parents.

But if you’re an eager fan, patiently waiting for this film to come out of the jailhouse, you’ll be happy to know that the film is slated for release June 2022, after being announced that it won’t be apart of Warner Bros arrangement of dropping its entire 2021 slate on to HBO Max. Casting rumours began early on in the development process, with Ansel Elgort, Miles Teller, Austin Butler, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Harry Styles all shortlisted for the role. But after a fierce and rigorous casting process, Austin Butler came out on top and Styles revealed in an interview shortly after, that he’s not salty at all.

You may or may not remember, that Tom Hanks and his wife were the first celebrities to come forward for testing positive for Corona early on in the pandemic. With news of this halting production for months, as well as the regulations set by the Australian government, filming resumed late August – but not without a series of precautions in place. According to The Brisbane Times, the production set up its own COVID testing centre on-site for all members of cast and crew to check-in at on a regular basis. Furthermore, any cast or crew member flying in must undergo a 14-day quarantine before reaching the site, which could be the reason why the release date was pushed back another year.

We know it might seem strange, but there are actually two biopics in the works – reportedly. Based on Elvis Presley’s half brother’s book Conversations With the King: Journals of a Young Apprentice, the film was in development in 2012, but there has been no news on the production since. Leading to believe it might have been scraped.
