It’s been 100 years since the roaring twenties: bootleg alcohol, shimmering flapper dresses and extravagant parties – and with it being the year 2021, it was definitely wishful thinking that we might be on the cusp of a resurgence.
And while a pandemic might be holding us back from our best debaucherous lives for now, Elizabeth director Michael Hirst is about to transport us back to the 20s with a big-budget TV series based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s iconic novel, The Great Gatsby.
Now we know what you’re thinking, Leonardo DiCaprio did what needed to be done with his portrayal as Jay Gatsby in the Baz Luhrmann 2013 adaptation, but Hirst promises that his version will go down a different route.
Set to explore New York’s black community in the 1920s as well as the musical subculture, Hirst will dig deeper into the times and the hidden lives of its characters through the modern lens of the fractured American dream.
