There has been no shortage of royal biopics over the years with the binge-worthy series The Crown stealing our screens and Helen Mirren’s Oscar-winning portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen leaving us in awe. Now actress Kristen Stewart will be taking on the role of the people’s princess, Princess Diana in Pablo Larraín’s (Jackie) new film Spencer. Dropping the first look today, we see Stewart donning a black lace veil starring into the distance. With principal photography for the cast already shot, filming will take place in Germany and the UK for an autumn 2021 release.
The drama is set to cover a critical weekend in the early 90s when Diana decided her marriage to Prince Charles wasn’t working. Taking place over three days in one of her final Christmas holidays in the House of Windsor, Diana decides she needs a change and wants to veer from a path that put her in line to be queen. Opening up on the role Stewart said, “Spencer is a dive inside an emotional imagining of who Diana was at a pivotal turning point in her life. It is a physical assertion of the sum of her parts, which starts with her given name; Spencer. It is a harrowing effort for her to return to herself, as Diana strives to hold onto what the name Spencer means to her.’
The director of Jackie and Neruda, told Deadline, “Kristin can be many things, and she can be very mysterious and very fragile an ultimately very strong as well, which is what we need.”
