Whether he’s capturing the nation’s heart as Normal People’s Connell, keeping us on the edge of our seats in Irish psychological thriller The Deceived, or drunk dancing in a hotel room for a Rolling Stones music video, Paul Mescal has quickly made a name for himself as a talent of meteoric proportions. Fortunately, he’s set to return our screens again at Dublin’s International Film Festival in March.

Entitled Drifting, the Mescal-starring short film takes place over 24 hours and tells the tale of two best friends who are slowly drifting apart. While Cian (Paul Mescal) appears content with small-town life and all its familiar comforts, Pat (Dafhyd Flynn) begins to grow increasingly curious about the world beyond home. This drives a quiet rift between the boys, who have been joined at the hip since they were kids. Co-written and co-directed by filmmaker Robert Higgins, the film touches upon the universal themes of friendship, love and growing up.

While this Mescal-return might only be for a fleeting, precious 14 minutes, we can sleep easy knowing that we’ll be seeing plenty more of the Irish heartthrob this year: set to star in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut The Lost Daughter (alongside Olivia Colman and Dakota Johnson), he will also be performing in the musical, Carmen, as a soldier seduced by a fiery gypsy.
