“Fuck him on the first date/tell him that he can’t stay/2020 no shame.” We absolutely have no choice but to stan. Sexual empowerment, control and female agency. Yes, these are things we can get behind. And meet the artist championing this message with her pedal to the metal: July Jones. And her new track “2020 Girls” is no exception.

Propulsive rhythms, simmering electronic production and the piercing vocals of Jones cut through the song – with the sultry visuals serving as a provocative accompaniment.

“2020 Girls is about showing the new era of women empowerment,” explains Jones. “With its lyrics which some people might find provocative, ‘2020 Girls’ shows women in a less emotional light. The chorus being ‘fuck him on the first date, tell him that he can’t stay, 2020 no shame, I tried to show its okay to have one-night stands, multiple lovers as a woman.

“I also wanted to emphasise on a diversity of women by including trans women and women from different ethnical background in the music video, breaking down a stereotype of what a woman looks like and how a woman should behave.”

Since her introduction to the industry, the Slovenia-hailed pop maverick has been making waves with her emboldened stance on mental health, LGBTQ+ issues, diversity and reflections on social media.
