To play us firmly and raucously into the weekend is the heavenly synth-driven soundwaves of “Gentle Riot”, the new tune from London-based singer, songwriter and producer Sølv (Danish for “silver”).
Inspired by the ethereal and innovative tones of FKA Twigs, Banks and Grimes, plus the introspective lyricism of Frank Ocean, Sølv has been making waves for a while now with her brand of simmering electronic R&B-infused pop. And self-produced instant-hit “Gentle Riot” is a prime example of her production finesse: sultry vocals, haunting lyricism layered over brooding trap beats and addictive melodies.
“I wrote, produced and recorded ‘Gentle Riot’ during lockdown,” explains Sølv. “It’s about learning to be unmistakably yourself. Originally written as a comeback to anyone who tries to keep you in your place and not believing in the power and potential you hold, I soon realised it was just as much an internal conversation; an energy that paves the way towards self-acceptance. It’s about not listening to your self-sabotaging inner voice and trusting your true intuition.”
