Making her entrance into the alt-pop genre is 21-year-old Toronto native ARI with her new video “IDIOT GRL”. The video exclusively released today, shows ARI in her old bedroom reflecting on her youth as she tackles her old insecurities and how they shaped her into who she is today. Directed by Lebni Avitia, the video also takes us through a school talent show where we see ARI being judged for who she is and ultimately being called an idiot girl. With her upcoming EP set to tackle themes of mental health and self-worth, ARI showcases her vulnerability with candid and conversational lyrics.

Speaking to Wonderland on the inspiration behind the video, the singer said, “‘IDIOT GRL’ is the unfiltered story of me – all of the neurotic, self-deprecating, sometimes amazing, and most honest parts of myself. I wanted the video to be as personal as the song itself. I included nostalgic elements from my childhood such as the pink bedroom walls and my old grade 6 graduation dress that I squeezed into for the talent show scene. When coming up with the video concept, I wanted it to have an ambiguous ending that leaves you questioning what happens next. I don’t feel like there is necessarily one triumphant moment in life where things get better; there is always growing to be done. The video represents me choosing to embrace this ‘IDIOT GRL’ persona and learning how to proudly own it.”

With lockdown gripping the world, the rising singer-songwriter has been performing at Together Toronoto’s drive-in concert series and is set to perform at the upcoming Bandsintown LIVE virtual event. As the singer continues to establish herself as a star, we’ll be keeping a close eye on the ARI as she starts the next chapter of her career.

ARI’s IDIOT GRL EP drops tomorrow, August 14th. Click here to pre-save and check out the video for the title track below…
