Since the early noughties, Stephanie Meyer’s canonical vampire books have infiltrated the minds, hearts and salivary glands of people of all ages – with the cult film adaptations propelling young stars (now wildly successful Hollywood institutions) Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart to global fame.

And now, just as stans had about settled down, with the passing decades just about dampening our thirst, Meyers has now announced she will be publishing Midnight Sun this year – a retelling of the Twilight saga – but this time from Edward Cullen’s perspective.

The author had originally abandoned the manuscript 12 years ago after online leaks compromised the story, but last week, Meyers added a mysterious announcement countdown to her website, which saw it crash upon timing out due to the volume of fans trying to reach the page.

The romance between human teen Bella Swan and sparkly reluctant vampire Edward Cullen will receive a rehash – and according to Little, Brown, the book’s publisher, Midnight Sun will draw “on the classic myth of Hades and Persephone” in “an epic novel about the profound pleasures and devastating consequences of immortal love”.

The publisher added: “This unforgettable tale as told through Edward’s eyes takes on a new and decidedly dark twist. Meeting beautiful, mysterious Bella is both the most intriguing and unnerving event he has experienced in his long life as a vampire. As we learn more fascinating details about Edward’s past and the complexity of his inner thoughts, we understand why this is the defining struggle of his life. How can he let himself fall in love with Bella when he knows that he is endangering her life?”
