Not everyone can say that their debut EP features a track that was co-written by Billie Eilish, but not everyone has the determination of Canadian musician Tate McRae – who has enjoyed viral success with well, pretty much every track she’s put out so far.

The teenager’s YouTube channel – which features her newer produced visuals, and goes all the way back to her earlier days singing along to a keyboard – boasts over 2 million followers. Yes, this is a newcomer to keep your eye on.

And sonically, McRae’s catchy bedroom pop is filled to the brim with propulsive rhythms, with her sharp undulating vocals drawing the listener in track after track.

We caught up with the singer-songwriter below…

When did you realise you wanted to pursue music?
I feel like music has always just been a massive part of my life. I’ve been dancing, singing and performing since I was super young, so music has always been my influence for everything. But I would say when I posted my first original song out on YouTube was a big turning point for me. that was where my songwriting really began to click for me.

How would you describe your genre?
My genre is kinda all over the place, but if I were to put it into a category
I’d say alternative pop. I definitely think my songs have a moodier vibe to them.

Who did you grow up listening to?
I grew up listening to a lot of different stuff. At a young age I definitely focused way more on what songs I liked in the moment rather than a specific artist, but I loved artists like Justin Bieber Rihanna, Drake…

What’s the best piece of feedback you’ve had on your music?
Probably just to never stop evolving. Keep learning and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone. Rather than focusing on the end result, focus on the process getting there.

Your music videos also incorporate your passion for dancing – is this important to you?
This is so important to me. I think my dancing is gonna be such a such a big part of my singing because it brings my lyrics to my life. I have almost full creative input on all my stuff, which is amazing when in the process of figuring out how I’m gonna tell all these different stories through movement.

What is your new EP about?
My new EP is called “all the things i never said”. It has a mix of several different situations and I feel like it reaches some relatable topics. Talking about love to friend dramas to people I barely know – these lyrics are all the things I never knew how to put into words.

What’s your favourite lyric in it?
”I have a list of all my habits, habits, wish I didn’t have it, so bad it’s cause all of them are you and the bad things that you do.” – stupid

Who would you love to collaborate with?
Id love to collaborate with someone like Khalid or Post Maline. That would just be a dream.

What are you excited for next?
I’m stoked about going on a second headlining tour in April, releasing lots more music and videos, and working on a lot of cool things at the moment. Can’t wait for everyone to hear the music I haven’t been able to put out for a long time.
