There aren’t many artists that can say their inspirations veer wildly from D’Angelo to Tame Impala, but if it’s one thing to know, it’s that Montreal-based band Chiiild are not doing things by the book.
And sonically, the slow unfurling tendrils of R&B, psychedelia and soul are perceptible in their heady pop – already making waves with hypnotic tracks such as “Back To Life” and “Count Me Out”.
We caught up with Chiiild below…
When did you first realise you first wanted to get into music?
For as long as I can remember.
What music did you listen to when you were growing up?
Biggie, Brandy, Craig David, Wu-Tang, Moby and the list goes on. Growing up in Canada you’re exposed to large palette of music.
How would you describe your genre?
A mix of old and new. We love to make it feel nostalgic but also inspired. We dubbed it “synthetic soul” which is also the name of the first EP.
What is “Hands Off Me” about?
“Hands Off Me” is a song about honouring a woman you admire. The moment you take the weight off and indulge in each other.
Where do you normally get your inspirations from?
When you experience something you get a feeling that stays with you. Writing music is about creating the score for those everyday moments. We all have that one record that defines the simple moments. We’re just scoring our own.
What’s the best piece of feedback you’ve ever received from a fan?
How a song like “Count Me Out” can pull you out from a dark place and build you up.
Who would you love to collaborate with?
Moby and Tyler The Creator.
What’s next for you/what are you excited about?
More Songs, more shows.
