“You know we all are, [acting] all the time.”
Childhood trauma. PTSD. Family. The pain we carry. How we turn into the people that we turn into. Honey Boy explores all these themes in the most raw and uncomplicated way.
But before we proceed, here’s the complicated part.
In Shia LaBeouf’s semi-autobiographical film (he wrote the script and based it on his own childhood), he plays his own father. Noah Jupe plays Otis Lort, a young Shia, whose acting career keeps the family financially afloat. Lucas Hedges then plays an older version of Shia, following his turn as troubled, precocious child star into difficult, violent performance artist.
After a DUI, he finds himself in court-ordered rehab, prodded by his counsellor to dig deeper and deeper to the searing root canal of his uncontrollable rage.
