WONDERLIST

Yung Lean, Sega Bodega and a brand new FKA Twigs album: here’s the soundtrack for our weekend.

FKA Twigs – “Sad Day”

Since her triumphant return with “Cellophane” earlier on this year, our alt-pop princess has been fairly busy dropping genre-defying pirate-trap with Future as well as the haunting and mega climactic “Home With You”. With new album Magdalene out today, accruing production credits from the likes of Arca to Skrillex, we couldn’t be happier. Upon first listen “Sad Day” was clearly a standout, the most ethereal dark pop release of Twigs’ to date. “Would you make a wish on my love?” she asks, stuttering and repeating her wish until it sounds nonsensical, plunging straight into the signature otherworldly production that has characterised her work from the start. But something’s changed, her sound has evolved and she’s not that girl from the video anymore, she’s the artist on stage wielding a samurai, the patron saint Mary Magdalene, the mutated figure in the artwork by Matthew Stone, maybe even the winner of the album of the year?

Sega Bodega – “U Suck”

Sega Bodega’s new track “U Suck” bookends a fruitful year for the superstar artist, his label NUXXE (co-founded with Shygirl, Coucou Chloe and Oklou) is thriving, the album he had a huge hand in producing for Brooke Candy was met with rave reviews after it’s release last month, and tickets for his latest gig in St Pancras sold out this morning in less than an hour. “U Suck” is a release just for Bodega, as he turns his attention to the next frontier of musical artistry – singing. The tracks video takes the term bedroom ‘Bedroom Pop’ quite literally, with Bodega residing in an asylum-esque white room, the colour palette disrupted only by the artist removing his own heart and setting it ablaze. Our favourite part might be the eight seconds ‘fuck you’ vocal loop which we cannot stop replaying. Sheer lyrical bliss.

Yung Lean – “Blue Plastic”

Six years on from the timeless classic that is “Hurt”, we just can’t seem to quit Soundcloud’s vaporwave pioneer Yung Lean, no matter how hard we try. The Sweedish rappers new track “Blue Plastic” at its forefront showcases Lean’s strong vocal talent, transporting us to a Blade Runner style virtual reality in the process. If you were riding around the hover-car highway in a floating Uber, passing huge LED billboards and Instagram worthy neon signs hidden by thick condensation, in which you definitely drew your name, this song would end your search for a musical masterpiece. Buried beneath all the synths and sirens is an element of romanticism that sinks its teeth into your heart and never quite lets go. It’s this unremitting emotion that will always, always keep us coming back for more.

Glowie – “Unlovable”

Our AW19 Rollacoaster cover star is here with a sentimental anthem for those feeling neglected this November. The track begins with dreamy guitars before abruptly sending you into a pop frenzy, Glowie’s stunning voice effortlessly towering over some head-bopping production. The accompanying video makes reference to the iconic bikinis of Baywatch, turning the show on its head with an inclusive troop of dancers partying poolside, making it more Glee than Jaws for sure. It doesn’t take many listens to confirm the track as a certified banger.

James Delaney – Dissipate

What could possibly be better than a track fusing rhythmic electronica, baritone sax, electric guitars with nods to R&B and jazz? It’s pretty simple – a whole EP of them! James Delaney’s debut, titled Dissipate, is a study in throbbing beats and powerful vocal precision in which Delaney brings it on all levels. If we had to pick a favourite, “Afterglow” would probably take the cake. Between Delaney’s sharp delivery and the persistent, biting beats, the track never seems to peak, ever. This uplifting and transformative energy is maintained throughout with tiny breaks, dipping and jumping right back up again before you even realise what’s happened. The result leaves you breathless and fully gripped all at once.
