Meet newcomer T from Various, founder of the ‘Various’ collective, hence the name. The 20-year-old student, based in Miami, has just dropped their brand new, three-track EP “Can I Hold The Mic???”. Their debut release is eight minutes and sixteen seconds of pure, feel-good hip-hop and pop fusion, showcasing the best of T’s vocal talent and inspiring lyrics, with and without production.
“I feel like I got the best song in the world right now, I just need the right people to hear it,” the 20-year-old confesses, clearly aware of all they have to give to the world. But before we get to hear two of the world’s best songs, our journey with their EP starts with a shy and bashful poetry reading. Stripped totally bare of a backing track or any other concealing factors, T relies only on the power of their words and the expression of such, the simple format contrasting against their complex and honest writing.
No sooner than this short and thoughtful introduction is over do we plunge straight into the light-hearted and sweet “Free”, T’s confidence soaring line-by-line as they spit with carefree ease and conviction. The EP’s final track, “Don’t go”, similarly carries off this twinkly lo-fi take on modern rap, swapping ever-building synths for tranquil drum beats and verse after verse of smooth vocal brilliance. If we were to sum it up in a sentence, the EP is basically rap made for the Animal Crossing universe – innovative and plush, underlined by an unexplained sweetness.
