Princess Nokia – “Sugar Honey Iced Tea (S.H.I.T.)”

New York rapper Princess Nokia is back, with the expertly named “Sugar Honey Iced Tea (S.H.I.T.)”. Referencing everything from the voguing scene and Aaliyah to Harlem’s ballrooms and Debra Paget’s snake dance in 1959’s The Indian Tomb, the video encapsulates the many influences that inspire the rapper’s music and life. The video also sees Princess Nokia as the winning contestant in a ‘60s-era Puerto Rican beauty pageant, and features members of her family and friends such as her godmother, her goddaughter, and Bronx rapper Maliibu Miitch touching up her makeup in the pageant dressing room. We’re so here for it.

The Script – “The Last Time”

“The Man Who Can’t Be Moved” was an iconic ballad back when it came out in 2008, and now The Script are going back to what brought them their initial recognition in abundance. With new single “The Last Time”, the Irish trio bring us a vibrant, instantly catchy anthem akin to the tracks we loved from them so much at the start. But while “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved” told a story of love at first sight, “The Last Time” is “about the intense feelings you experience when you realise you may be seeing the one you love… for the last time”, according to lead vocalist Danny O’Donoghue.

Tallulah – “Sundress”

South London singer, songwriter and label boss Tallulah has blessed us with yet another excellent single this week, this time in the form of the laidback, end-of-summer track: “Sundress”. Based around her lack of necessity for material things, Tallulah explains that “Money can’t make us fall in love! It’s inspired by road trips that I’ve taken with different lovers throughout my life, and the freedom that comes with setting off in a car wiSomething wthout a plan – those times have made me feel the most in love”.

SNOW CULTURE – “Treasure”

SNOW CULTURE have been making waves since releasing their debut single “No Sleep” in 2017, when the pair, Ana Diaz and Oskar Sikow, were only known as “A” and “O”. After signing to buzzy label Neon Golden Records, SNOW CULTURE are returning with their new single “Treasures”, a sombre indie-pop track showcasing the Swedish duo’s dreamy vocals.

“When we were in the studio creating ‘Treasures’, Stockholm was very dark and cold… and I was going through it – dealing with depression and anxiety”, explains Anna. “I’d read something somewhere about depression can provide us with great insight into ourselves, if we stick it out, it can help us come out stronger, more self aware… that in the deep, that darkness and difficulty, there are jewels to be found. I really needed something to hold on, I wanted a promise, that treasures were awaiting me if I kept digging. That’s how ‘Treasures’ was created”.

Zsela – “Earlier Days”

Little sister of Marvel star Tessa Thompson and daughter of Marc Anthony Thompson a.k.a. ‘90s rock collective Chocolate Genius, Zsela was primed for success from day one. Debuting her raspy, timeless vocals in the debut single “Noise” earlier this year – accompanied by a one-shot video filmed in New York’s busy Times Square – the Brooklyn-born songstress returns with “Earlier Days”, another personal track about a broken heart. Taken from her upcoming debut EP, which is set to be an evocative collection of intimate songs, “Earlier Days” showcases more of Zsela’s impressive vocals and firmly sets her up for even more success.

Julian Lamadrid – “Red Car”

New York-based Julian Lamadrid has been on our radar since he released his debut single “Mess”, with the trippy visuals for his later track “Neon” confirming his unique sound. Merging influences from bedroom pop and hip hop to ‘80s synths, the 21-year-old aims to weave a story of his youth through his intimate lyrics. His latest release from upcoming debut album Mala Noche, “Red Car”, comes accompanied by a stripped-down live session video and offers his most personal work yet.

“Red Car is a return to form, a boy and his guitar singing from the depths of his vulnerability”, explains Lamadrid. “It’s a soft meditation on the glorification of beauty”.

Meron Addis – “Like I Need”

Meron Addis has been carving out her space in the industry with her nostalgic, R&B-infused sound, and her new track “Like I Need” is no different. Over an upbeat, early noughties-inspired melody, the singer-songwriter’s vocals tell the story of her readiness for “something new”, allowing us to see another, more personal side to her music. Produced by fellow Londoner Big J, the visuals also see Addis recreating a ‘MEZ Talk’, her own version of the well-known TED talks which tackle subjects such as philosophy and technology.

“Sometimes we go through periods of uncertainty but the more you grow, the more you know yourself and how you receive love”, says the songstress about the track. “So this song is about making the decision to do better for yourself and sticking to it”.

Charli XCX and Troye Sivan – “2099”

We’ve been banging out Charli XCX and Troye Sivan’s nostalgia-heavy bop “1999” religiously for a while now, so we naturally rejoiced when the collab-ing duo dropped a futuristic follow up with “2099”. Another synth-heavy, electronic pop banger from Charli’s upcoming self-titled album, the song once again demonstrates the perfect pairing between the songstress and Australian singer, actor and YouTuber Sivan. Where the “1999” video payed homage to classic pop-culture moments and trends such as The Sims, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, and Titanic, “2099”’s visuals feature Charli and Sivan riding on jetskis through an ocean, with Sivan (or more likely a double) performing multiple stunts. We’ll be waiting with baited breath for whatever “3099” could bring…
