At this point, the increasing omnipresence of artificial intelligence in society is just inevitable. Black Mirror has dedicated the majority of its episodes to exploring our collective cultural anxieties surrounding futuristic technology advancements and their (still relatively unknown) possible consequences. Humanoid robot creations are not only capable of engaging in conversations and forming opinions, they can also fully function as artists and as pop stars. Soon, one of the world’s most famous AI figures will be making her way to the big screen.

Sophia, the creepily realistic humanoid robot, created in Hong Kong by David Hanson in 2016, will be the focus of a new short film, alongside Westworld’s Evan Rachel Wood. While not much is known about the plot of SophiaWorld, or if the cast will feature any more AI creations, the IMDB page offers an ominous description:

“Television’s most famous Robot, actress Evan Rachel Wood, and arguably the world’s most famous real life humanoid, Sophia the Robot, have a chance encounter in a swanky NY hotel bar. But this coincidental meeting is far more than it seems”.

Sophia was the first robot to be granted legal citizenship after becoming a citizen of Saudi Arabia in 2017, and now it looks like she’ll be the first to be credited as a main role in a film. Could she then become the first robot to walk down the red carpet? To win an industry award? To get a star on the walk of fame? The possibilities are endless, if slightly terrifying.

SophiaWorld will premiere on futurism.com on 4th September. Watch the teaser trailer below…
