50 years ago, on July 21 1969, history was made when man first walked on the Moon. In the early hours of the morning, Commander Neil Armstrong became the first human to step foot on the lunar surface, followed by lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin 19 minutes later. When they spoke to President Nixon after planting the US flag on that monumental morning, Armstrong described the event as “representing not only the United States, but men of peace of all nations, and with interest and curiosity, and men with a vision for the future.”

It is towards the future that we will be looking throughout this project. Partnering with Omega – whose watches Armstrong and Aldrin wore during the Apollo 11 Moon Landing – we are looking at the acts who are breaking new ground in their fields and in their own way striving to create a new vision for the future. Each of them pioneering forces in the 2019 music scene, these four artists are breaking down barriers and changing their craft through their ingenuity and creativity.

Voyager One name: Omar Velasco (Omar Apollo)

DOB: 20-05-97

Occupation: Musician

Definition: “I’m not trying to be anybody else”

What makes you different?
I’m not really sure what makes me different, I just know who I am.

How are you shaping the future?
I don’t know how the future’s going to shape, I just hope I can inspire more kids to play instruments and follow their passions.

How are you breaking new ground?
I’m breaking new ground by making what I want to make. I don’t think I can say I’m the only one combining the genres that I am, but I hope that I’m doing it in a new way. Also, I just want to represent all of the Mexican-American kids that were told they couldn’t be musicians and that they should take the school path.

Who is your main source of inspiration?
I think Prince is the one person who makes me feel better when I don’t want to do anything or I’m overwhelmed. It’s just his music that does that for me.

How have they inspired you?
Prince is just an all-round talented human. Nobody did it like him.

How do they continue to inspire you?
I haven’t gone through his whole discography, so there’s always inspiration since I’m always finding new songs by him. His music was so diverse. That’s how I want people to describe my music.

What are the main things that you’ve learnt from them?
Don’t be a boring performer. Be dramatic. Be extra. Put on a show.

How would you like to inspire others?
I’m not sure, I just hope people can take advantage of the little time we got. Life’s too short man. I’m just trying to use my time here to make the best art I can and hopefully it can help people through tough times and that they can take something away from it.

Who else should we have on our radar?
Mk.gee – he’s a singer, songwriter, producer from New Jersey. I think he’s one of the best right now and he really inspires me to get better.

Diamond Cafe – singer, songwriter, producer from Canada. I played some shows with him last month and he has a crazy voice and he knows what he’s doing. He’s gonna go crazy.
