50 years ago, on July 21 1969, history was made when man first walked on the Moon. In the early hours of the morning, Commander Neil Armstrong became the first human to step foot on the lunar surface, followed by lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin 19 minutes later. When they spoke to President Nixon after planting the US flag on that monumental morning, Armstrong described the event as “representing not only the United States, but men of peace of all nations, and with interest and curiosity, and men with a vision for the future.”

It is towards the future that we will be looking throughout this project. Partnering with Omega – whose watches Armstrong and Aldrin wore during the Apollo 11 Moon Landing – we are looking at the acts who are breaking new ground in their fields and in their own way striving to create a new vision for the future. Each of them pioneering forces in the 2019 music scene, these four artists are breaking down barriers and changing their craft through their ingenuity and creativity.

Check out Omega’s Speedmaster Moonwatch Collection and meet our first visionary, Gus Dapperton, below.

Voyager One: Brendan Rice (Gus Dapperton)

DOB: 11-03-97

Occupation: Musician

Definition: “I think fate decided what I do.”

What makes you different?
What makes me different is that I am a bad singer.

How are you shaping the future?
I think that musicians pave a way for like-minded individuals that look up to them. I think that I am trying to encourage the youth to express themselves as much as they can from a younger age. So, I hope that if I am shaping anything that it would be to express yourself and support others around you.

How are you breaking new ground?
I guess I try to make sounds that have never been heard before and I try to say things that have never been said before in my music. I don’t think there’s much of a point to making music if you’re not striving to create new and innovative things.

Who is your main source of inspiration?
Honestly, just all of my friends and family and loved ones. Love is the most powerful feeling aside from tragedy and deceit and betrayal. I’m always constantly inspired by my friends and family and whatever they’re doing, whether it’s negative or positive. I’m usually inspired by them because whatever happens with them means more to me than whatever happens with some figure that I’m inspired by musically.

How have they inspired you?
Just to reflect on myself and take those feelings and put them into words and sounds.

How do they continue to inspire you?
They will continue to inspire me in regard to putting real emotions into my work and caring for one another.

What are the main things that you’ve learnt from them?
That there needs to be a healthy relationship with caring for your loved ones and also doing your dreams because, as brilliant as it is to follow your dreams, it’s not necessarily healthy to put everyone else past you in doing so.

How would you like to inspire others?
I would like to inspire others to be themselves and try to look past judgements that are bestowed upon them, peers and family members and to express themselves to the fullest extent that they feel comfortable. I want to inspire people to make art too, anytime about anything that they’re passionate about. I hope to inspire people to follow that.

Who else should we have on our radar?
Orion Sun – I think she creates really beautiful music and solely cares about the music and her art and less about how it’s released and how it’s received and she’s a really nice person. I like her music a lot. [And] Chela – she’s a really incredible artist and I think that she just has her music really dialled in. I really appreciate that she directed all her own videos and they’re always very original concepts. All the songs are very reminiscent of the past, they all have such an original sound.
