“I live for today, tomorrow, and maybe after tomorrow,” Karl Lagerfeld once told Wonderland. After his passing in February, the designer’s final Pre-Fall collection for Chanel carries that sentiment, holding an unexpected poignancy. Lagerfeld conjured the mythological magic of Ancient Egypt — a civilisation we can only imagine from artefacts — and made it something tangible. “I like things to be what they don’t at first seem,” Lagerfeld professed to us, and what could be a more apt example of his lifelong genius than Pre-Fall 19? Where the gold of unearthed treasures are weaved into bouclés, hieroglyphs are pasted onto denim and Egyptian kilts become gender-bending fashion statements. Akin to our amazement at the 5000-year-old world that walked for one day on Chanel’s catwalk, Karl will continue to inspire generations after his passing.
Wonderland.
