Instant classics like “The Big Unknown” and melancholy, vocal-soaked “Bamboo” means that unassuming Bristol-hailed collective Elder Island have been slowly creeping into our consciousness over the last couple of years.

Mesmerising melodies, playful production and their signature shapeshifting, genre-switching sound have been sweeping intimate gig venues, as well as the festival circuit, including the UK’s most-loved, such as past sets at pioneering Secret Garden Party and Lost Village.

We caught up with the band who have curated us a playlist of their favourite bangers this summer…

Roberta Flack – “Back Together Again” (ft. Donny Hathaway)

Can’t get enough of this song and I will be playing it at any chance this summer.

Anderson. Paak – “Yada Yada”

I think Ventura might be my album of the summer and this track is definitely the most summery (for me) on it. It gives me visuals of bright sunshine, smiles and drinks. Exactly what we want.

Letherette – “Oh Lord”

Needs no introduction.

Souls of Mischief – “93’ Til Infinity”

This is nostalgia summer spent dossing about in Birmingham as a teen, so much love for those hazy sun-baked days in the city and the friends I shared them with.

Roy Ayers – “Everybody Loves The Sunshine”

The ultimate signifier that summer has begun.

Armand Van Helden – “U Don’t Know Me”

Had to get a dance classic in there.

Curtis Mayfield – “Move On Up”

One of the biggest soul tunes EVER.

Emmanuel Jal – “Kuar” (Henrik Schwarz Remix)

High moment whilst playing out tunes at Lost Village 2017.

Elder Island play Lost Village Festival in Lincolnshire 22nd-25th August. Final tickets to the festival available here.
