There are songs that are catchy, and there are songs that are unforgettable because of their lush, complex production, and the latest track from Canadian producer and singer Lydia Ainsworth, “Diamonds Cutting Diamonds,” is the latter.

Taken from her forthcoming record, Phantom Forest, the vibrant gem pulses with trickling synth-notes, retro 80s tones, and the classic, piercing vocals of Ainsworth.

“I began the instrumental to this song many many moons ago,” she explains. “The chorus bass line was one of those rare out-of-body downloads, captured and perpetually pulsating in the back of my mind for future use. Although I tried very hard, I couldn’t seem to crack the code of the song for years and just about gave up on the possibility of ever finishing it. About halfway through writing Phantom Forest, though, I shook the dust off once more and somehow the stars of inspiration aligned. I could see clearly, now, a diamond in the making. Lyrically, I am singing about the entrance to Phantom Forest and how one must draw from the innate feminine wild within to unlock obstacles along the path.
