“In 1972, Aretha Franklin recorded the album Amazing Grace at a church in south Los Angeles.” So begins the spine-tingling trailer for the music documentary centred on the famous performance from the soul icon. As the first few hair-raising acapella notes of “Amazing Grace” floods the church, we see tears, hands raised, and knee-jerk reactions of disbelief.

Self-discovery, loss, romance and lots and lots of lols, coming right up.
New Orleans-born actor Jim Cummings hits genius highs in this indie comedy-drama like no other. Named after the Springsteen song, the film follows a police officer going through a hard time, dealing with a divorce from his wife, as well as the death of his mother. A perfectly balanced flick, packed with comedy verging on the ridiculous, plus grounding splashes of despair thrown in for good measure.
Greta Gerwig’s Oscar-nominated Lady Bird walked so Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut Booksmart could run. Just saying. The coming-of-age comedy looks at two overachieving best friends who go wild on one night after having regrets that they might have placed too much emphasis on their studies over the last four years. Whip-smart, ridiculous, but full of heart.
