7 WONDERS: RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE

Following the announcement of the BBC’s plans to bring the show to the UK in 2019, we take a look at the series’ best moments over the years.

1. Violet Chachki’s “Two In One” Tartan Runway Look.

There is so much to love about this clip, from season 7’s eventual winner Violet Chachki. The outfit, for one, is incredible, combining heritage tartan and shimmering black sequens for the most elegant BOGOF outfit you’ve ever seen. The judges’ reactions are also priceless, with various “ooh”s, “wow”s and even “Bay City Roller” hollered as Chachki struts her stuff. Youtube user GracefulDanny hits the nail on the head in saying: “She won the moment she undid that belt tbh.” Agreed.

2. Sharon Needles & Phi Phi O’Hara Fight It Out.

This was a classic case of TV goody vs. baddy, as the much maligned Phi Phi O’Hara’s underlying feud with Sharon Needles boiled over into a full-blown shouting match. With Sharon taking issue over Phi Phi’s leadership, Phi Phi seems to cross a line when she suggests that she is the sole reason for Sharon’s victory in the pervious challenge. Fighting, inevitably, ensues, culminating in the unforgettable line “Go back to Party City where you belong!”

3. “Drag is NOT a contact sport.”

In what is probably the most legendary lip-sync showdown in the show’s series, Mimi Imfurst literally LIFTED her competitor, India Ferrah, onto her shoulders. What was going through the drag queen’s mind remains unbeknownst to us; maybe she thought thought the move would win the judges over for sheer dedication, maybe she was WWE-themeing her routine. In any case, the saga at least caused one of the series’ most iconic lines from RuPaul: “Drag is NOT a contact sport.”

4. Cher Cher Cher.

Professional Cher impersonator Chad Michaels absolutely nailed it in season 4, with an impression of the pop queen that came during the fan-favourite ‘Snatch Game.’ Kicking off with the defiant “I’m Cher, bitch!”, Michaels continued the uncanny impression to talk about hairstyles (“I can’t go five minutes without changing a wig”), plastic surgery (“alleged! Alleged!”) and more. A season-highlight.

5. Eye OF The Tiger.

In another iconic lip-sync battle, this time between Kennedy Davenport and Katya in season 7, the queens take on Katy Perry’s “Roar”, to devastating effect. A series of bodily contortions and facial convulsions later, the number ends with both performers triumphantly doing the splits, leaving RuPaul and the other judges with their mouths wide open in shocked awe. Amazing.

6. Ongina’s Emotional Revelation.

In one of the most emotional moments of the show’s very first season, we see the hugely brave drag queen Ongina admit, following victory in a challenge, that she has been living with HIV for the last two years. Amid tears, we see Ongina say that “you have to celebrate life, and keep going. And I kept going.” This was a hugely important moment for the show and for HIV survivors everywhere, and RuPaul sums it up perfectly in her response: “Ongina, you are an inspiration, a survivor, and baby you are still in the race.”

7. Hollywood Walk Of Fame.

Ok, we know this isn’t strictly a moment from the show, but we thought it was too important not to include. This year, RuPaul became the first drag queen to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Speaking at the unveiling, the show’s host said that he was “overcome with so much emotion” to achieve the accolade he’d dreamed of since he was a child. “This is absolutely the most important moment in my professional career,” the television presenter said. Fans streamed to Hollywood Boulevard in numbers to cheer RuPaul on, and give thanks for all he’s done for the LGBTQ community.
