TAYLOR SWIFT BREAKS POLITICAL SILENCE

“I cannot vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans.”

After a long (and much criticised) silence, Taylor Swift has addressed her political views ahead of the upcoming US midterm elections.

Yesterday, she posted a letter to her 112 million followers on Instagram denouncing Republican politician Marsha Blackburn, who’s running for Senate in the state of Tennessee.

“In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions”, acknowledged Swift. “But due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now. I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country.”

She went on to explain her democratic vote is rooted in a fight for dignity for all American citizens – namely women, the LGBTQ community, and people of colour: “I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG. I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent. I cannot vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender or who they love.”

Her announcement follows a long period of backlash for choosing to conceal her political position, which mostly claimed her motive for doing so was a fear of offending right-wing fans, and in turn, loosing out on record sales.

“I will be voting for Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for House of Representatives”, she proclaimed, urging her young fans to research candidates thoroughly and before voting: “Please, please educate yourself on the candidates running in your state and vote based on who most closely represents your values.”

Of course, Swift’s post has prompted an internet meltdown, with some praising her for speaking out, others questioning her motive, and many digging up old Kanye drama to pitch the two against each other for the 2024 presidential election.

So until Kanye inevitably responds with his own opinion on the matter and it all kicks off again, check out Swift’s Instagram post here.
