WONDERLIST

All the songs on repeat this week.

Lolo Zouaï – “Challenge”

It’s hard not to get excited when hearing the glossy, synth-laden sound waves of 23-year-old Paris-born Lolo Zouaï. An effortless hybrid of 90s R&B, slow-burn hip hop and pop, her latest song, “Challenge,” is a “feminist anthem for someone who is tired of weak game and just wants to feel challenged emotionally and physically. Boss shit.” You heard the woman. We want a challenge.

The 1975 – “Sincerity Is Scary”

One of the top comments on the visuals of this 1975 song reads: “the devil works hard, but the 1975 works harder.” We concur. “Sincerity Is Scary” traverses a different road to their usual synth pop-rock offerings. The result? A tender, gorgeously-composed beauty featuring jazz elements, twinkling keyboards as well as a soaring gospel choir chorus accompaniment. Love, love, love.

Au/Ra – “Emoji”

“Boy, I think you must be cool/‘Cos you use the alien face.” And so starts the very 21st century track from green-haired alt-pop newbie Au/Ra. The Ibiza-born Antigua-raised singer gets to grips with relationships in the age of apps in her catchy, tongue-in-cheek track. If in doubt, smiley it out.

Brockhampton – “J’OUVERT”

There’s a reason that every single song they’ve ever released is capped up, like a sharp exclamation. Brockhampton are a riot. And their recently-released highly-anticipated new album, iridescent, is a firm testimony to this. “J’OUVERT” is a moody, simmering track which samples Trinidad and Tobago track “Doh Blame Me” by Lavaman. Watch the visuals for disorientating, thermal scan fun.

Pale Waves – “Drive”

There’s something about Pale Waves that transports you to back to balmy summers and endless-possibilities teenage love. And with the recent release of their debut album, My Mind Makes Noises, the goth-pop fourtet have unleashed a helluva lot more dreaminess on us. “Drive” is the glittering crank-your-windows-down track we’ll have on repeat, thank you very much.
