PLAYLIST: SPECTOR

Fred Macpherson on the tracks to enjoy this weekend.

Reading and Leeds is a right of passage. The whole festival is tinged with nostalgia for our carefree teenage days, where there was nothing to do but get caked in mud and caught up in moshpits for hours on end. Still not sophisticated but very much as excited, we’re heading down this weekend to relive the magic.

And who better to get us pumped than number one indie dreamboat – Spector’s frontman Fred Macpherson? Personally, we’re living to see them play at the Festival Republic Stage on Sunday, but in the meantime, Fred’s picked out the tunes he’s most excited to hear across the weekend.

Travis Scott – “Sicko Mode”

When Travis Scott’s touring with a giant inflatable statue of his own head, you really wonder how the rest of the weekend’s lineup’s going to compete. Astroworld has more going on than that Flaming Lips album where you had to play four CD’s at the same time. Definitely a good thing.

J Hus – “Scene”

This is my favourite from the “Big Spang” EP. “Keep a stick in the uni boy’s basement” has to be one of the most ominous lyrics of the year.

Jimothy Lacoste – “I Can Speak Spanish”

I can’t get my head around Jimothy’s music which A: Makes me feel really old and B: Makes me think he’s probably a genius. Also, he can do more with £100 than most video directors can do with £100,000.

The Magic Gang – “Take Care”

You have to have a lot of gall to name a song after one of the greatest albums of all time, but I think TMG pilled it off here. Like John Lennon if he was good.

AJ Tracey – “Butterflies”

I interviewed AJ Tracey at his mum’s house a while back and it was a complete pleasure. He sounds as good on pop as he does on rap or grime and I’m so glad he’s had a hit without a label. The best song about butterflies since Crazy Town.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

I don’t know who must’ve pulled out for this to happen but they’re showing The Last Jedi in the 1Xtra tent. I actually didn’t think it was that bad and have been meaning to rewatch for a while.

Krept and Konan – “Wo Wo Wo”

I don’t think Crepes and Cones’ 2.5 TripAdvisor rating is very fair.

Dua Lipa – “One Kiss”

Without wanting to sound too much like Limmy this is undoubtedly the song of the summer and will be a great moment for anyone missing V Festival.
