PLAYLIST: LOLA KIRKE

The indie screen star picks her fave songs ahead of her debut album release.

Over the years, indie-dream actress Lola Kirke has had no shortage of screen time. She’s had acting credits in Gone Girl, Gemini, Amazon’s Golden Globe-winning series, Mozart in the Jungle – and most notably, Mistress America, where she starred alongside Ladybird director, Greta Gerwig.

But unbeknownst to most, the screen star has music in her blood (she’s the daughter of Simon Kirke, the drummer of Bad Company and Free, and her sister is singer-songwriter, Domino Kirke), so naturally, in 2016, it’s only right that she released her first EP.

And now with her debut album, Heart Head West, incoming this week – all crooning, bluesy Americana – who better to curate us an essential listening playlist?

Fleetwood Mac – “Future Games”

Behold how the Mac attacked even before Stevie!

Rod Stewart – “Mandolin Wind”

I love English people trying to sound like Americans probably because I’ve been doing that my whole life.

Free – “Muddy Water”

Every few years I relisten to my dad’s first band, Free, and almost have a panic attack that they made music this good when they were teenagers. I mean, come on.

Ahmad Jamal – “Poinciana”

No words, just feelings.

Alice Coltrane – “Illuminations”

Perfect for sex or yoga or crying.
