The Limerick-born, London-based trio on their top tracks for summer.
Aoife Power, Niall Burns and Andrew Flood met for the first time as underage teenagers in Costello’s Tavern, a sticky-floored music bar in Limerick, Ireland. Fuelled by cheap drinks and the sound of The Velvet Underground they bonded over their musical tastes, which eventually led to the formation of their own indie pop band whenyung.
Since moving to London in 2017, the trio has released a handful of successful singles, supported the likes of Dream Wife and The Vaccines, and have a string of festivals lined up for the summer.
While we keep their latest track “Heaven on Earth” on replay, they took us through their favourite tunes to add to the mix.
Talking Heads – “Once In A Lifetime”
The lyrics to this song really make you stop and reassess yourself. My interpretation is that the lyrics are questioning existence, materialism and reminding you not to let the days go by and take time for granted. The music is shimmering and hypnotic.
Mayer Hawthorne – “A Long Time”
This song makes you want to dance. The melody is feel good and his voice is beautiful. The song has one of the best music videos ever made, with the most amazing dancing it in.
The 1975 – “Give Yourself A Try”
We love the lyrics to this song. They’re very powerful and heart on your sleeve. We’re so lucky to have artists who write lyrics like this, the kind of lyrics that affect and change how people think about themselves.
Patti Smith – “People Have The Power”
This song prepares you for battle with injustice in the world. If Patti says we have the power we believe her.
Talk Talk – “Life’s What You Make It”
We love the lyrics, simple and to the point. It’s a euphoric banger.
Love – “Alone Again Or”
This is such an incredibly unique piece of music. It’s heart warming.
Wallace Collection – “Daydream”
This song is so dreamy. It takes you away to a place of complete happiness.
Enya – “Orinoco Flow”
Orinoco Flow is a hypnotic reverie. The layered vocals are magical and meditative.
