Birmingham duo Lotto Boyzz have had an undeniably great year. Racking up millions of YouTube plays and dropping their debut EP “Afrobbean: The Genre Definition” earlier this year, the pair are establishing themselves as one of the most exciting new acts around. Blending genres, their debut EP explores Afrobeat, Dancehall, Rap, Grime, Pop and R&B to create what the duo call “Afrobbean”.
Eager to find out what inspired their sound, we got the guys to put us together a playlist of the songs that have shaped them. Tune in now…
Wande Cole – “Taboo”
We feel like the way he played with his vocals was uniquely amazing, and the Afrobeats melodies inspired us when making our own project “Afrobbean (The Genre Definition)”.
Bob Marley – “Three Little Birds”
Coming from Caribbean families, we grew up listening to Bob Marley. “Three Little Birds” is a song that keeps us grounded as we always remember where we’ve come from and are inspired to be as legendary and timeless as Bob Marley.
2 Face – “African Queen”
One of the first Afrobeats songs we both heard. Got us hooked and introduced us to African culture. Our own music is inspired by Afrobeats, Dancehall and Gospel and we brought the genres all together to create our genre: Afrobbean.
Wayne Wonder – “No Letting Go”
This still goes off in a club. The melody is so catchy and you have to singalong when you hear it. When you hear our single “FaceTime Me” you get that same feeling where you can’t help but singalong.
Sean Paul – “Like Glue”
“Like Glue” was a song that introduced many people to Dancehall, and this is what we wanted to do with the same with our EP. From “Bumper (Afrobbean)” to “Birmingham”, we introduce people to Afrobbean the genre.
Shaggy – “It Wasn’t Me”
Storytelling is close to our music, and hearing this as kids Shaggy had us hooked with this storyline and his sense of humour comes across with the video.
Usher – “Confessions”
This whole album is sick! But “Confessions” is probably our favourite tune. “Unfinished Business” (off our EP) has the same type of vibe and it lets you know we’ve got more to come.
Lotto Boyzz – “No Don”
It’s important to us to create music that we’re inspired by and this is a banger that we created, so take a listen!
