PFW: MASHA MA SS18

See how the designer redefined tailoring and romanced the world of sci-fi in our exclusive video.

The sweet nothings born out of a sci-fi love affair, this is what inspired Masha Ma’s SS18 collection for her eponymous fashion brand. To an unfamiliar Western audience, the theme is perhaps less transparent, but to those in the know, the show was a love song to Wong Kar-wai’s romantic masterpiece, 2046. Taking cues from the poetic lines uttered by the unconsummated lovers in the film – “when the peony blooms she stands straight and tall” is a favourite – Ma’s cyber influenced collection was a dreamy and approachable exploration of the sci-fi trend that has appeared on many a runway this season.

Here techno glitch prints stood in lieu of the usual florals on slip dresses, while lace-up boots in piercing industrial yellow looked fit for a superhero on a dystopian mission. Elsewhere in the collection, Ma reimagined the humble suit. Classic pinstripes paired with unhemmed fishnet and anoraks introduced us to creative styling ideas, lifting her smart tailoring out of the workwear realm by way of athletic detailing. Innovative fashion for the woman of the future, Masha’s take on Spring Summer dressing accomplishes the effortless cool-girl vibe that the industry is always scrambling to obtain.

Offering wearability without creative compromise, this collection is sure to be a hit amongst street style stars and celebrities alike next season. The only question is, which Kardashian will get their hands on those thigh-highs first? Check out the full show in our exclusive video, below, and prepare to swoon.
