MFW: PRADA SS18

Comic and manga influences shape Miuccia’s new woman.

Comic Relief

Miuccia Prada’s references to cartoonist and manga artistry in her collection were not impenetrably obscure. They weren’t even subtle. Instead, they frankly emblazoned both the set and the garments that she sent down the runway. Strong and unashamed, their arresting presence echoed the attitude of SS18’s Prada woman: empowered, fearless and unapologetic. Ensuring that every piece of artwork she commissioned for the collection featured women who were actually drawn by female artists, the feminist statement was crystal clear. Ladies, it’s time to step up and unleash your inner superhero.

Layer Slayer

It would probably be quite easy to dissect this collection, reassign pieces to different looks and produce a fairly demure range of outfits, but that’s not what Miuccia wants. With a silk bustier thrown on top of an otherwise office-appropriate ensemble, and the remains of the dainty fabric seen scattered amongst other ingenious feats of layering on the runway, this collection heralds the eclectic. Sure, some of the dresses would look delightful solo at a garden party, but they pack a bigger punch when offset with asymmetric knitwear and an oversized shirt collar.

Top Coat

While you may still be agonising over which winter coat you should invest in this season, Miuccia reminds us that statement outerwear shouldn’t be something simply reserved for the colder months. If you’ve already decided on your armour of choice against the abrasive autumnal weather, then you can start looking ahead to next season. Prada’s offerings of a haphazardly printed tiger stripe trench coat and exquisitely adorned leather jackets do not disappoint, and paired with a pair of her slick sunglasses, they’re the perfect thing to keep yourself dry when the heavens inevitably open up come April.
