LFW: MOLLY GODDARD SS18

The designer brings champagne flutes, tulle looks and politics to the catwalk.

Generation Influencer

As far as we could tell – Insta-stalking credentials intact – there was no one claiming to be an ‘influencer’ on the front row at Molly Goddard’s Saturday afternoon show (neighbouring the BFC’s Caroline Rush, we would totally forgive London mayor Sadiq Khan if he ushered such a millennial phrase – because, come on – but likewise doubt he ever would), a quick glimpse in the shops en route to Goddard’s third catwalk show though, confirmed what we already figured: the twentysomething designer has power on the high street, with tulle and tiers doing big things in womenswear today.

Model Behaviour

“My doctor told me to watch my drinks. Now I drink in front of a mirror.” So began Saturday’s press release, and thus the mood was set. Edie Campbell opened – drink in one hand cigarette in the other – while Erin O’Connor closed; in-between a throwback to salon shows made good on the label’s track record of doing more than a show with each show. An assault course of platforms saw the girls pose – and the audience cheer – while a cocktail hour soundtrack ran through the room. The grand finale? Models in pairs, arm in arm with a champagne flute either side.

Back of the Net

“She has time to pause, to look and take in what’s around her,” continued the release. “She is on her way to a gallery opening and then for a steak.” This season she – the Molly Goddard woman – is also feeling more mature, with a toned down palette that reflects that (sequins also debuted, fun fans). She’s also taking a moment to give the person behind her something to enjoy, with several looks embracing a laced up back vibe.
