Just opened at the Camden based Cob Studios, Good Luck, is the joint exhibition between Hetty Douglas and Alfie Kungu. Consisting of 12 paintings – the largest that the artists have created to date – Good Luck combines Douglas and Kungu’s unique approaches, culminating in a vibrant display of colour, texture, and contemporary rebelliousness.

Since graduating LCF in 2013, Douglas – born in Nottingham, now based in south London – has quickly made her mark in the industry. Portraying both the “light and dark sides” of human existence, she represents the unspoken complexities of trust and truth. Vibrantly ingrained in her work – see ‘HET’ actually carved into a patch of cement – is a sense of her vigorous search for something of meaning in an increasingly fickle and unstable world.

Sharing Douglas’ ethos is fellow artist Kungu, whose playful works had him selected for emerging artist platform New Contemporaries in 2016. Featuring childlike characters from the artist’s youth, Kungu’s work depicts a hectic blend of abstract shapes and traditional painting skills.

Uniting the immature origins of Kungu’s characters with the mature sense of self and skillset that both artists share, Douglas and Kungu here present an exhibition that is a meaningful exploration of raw emotion, identity, and belonging.
