PFW: Louis Vuitton Men’s SS18

Kim Jones gives us a taste of island life.

Aloha!

When Men’s Artistic Director, Kim Jones, decided to base Louis Vuitton’s SS18 collection on his experiences of travelling to the world’s most idyllic islands, the inclusion of an Aloha print shirt was almost inevitable. However, if you’re picturing the garish shades and shapes of garments that can be purchased at bogus souvenir shops, then think again. Using the signature tones of the brand’s iconic monogram, a set of prints have been created that fuse the natural colours of the island – ocean blues and earthy browns and khakis – with effervescent flashes of electric greens, reds and yellows.

Extreme Sports

Paying homage to the water-based sports of island life – think windsurfing, surfing, and scuba diving – were an array of pieces designed to fit the more adventurous wearer. Neoprene leggings were matched with a shirt and jumper, a sleeveless leather scuba top was paired with sleek cargo pants, while the Louis Vuitton name became a sports logo for a bag strap. The collection revolves around Jones’ fusion of the different elements of island life, an influence that has produced ensembles that appear to have been made up of two, opposing outfits. We’re not complaining though; why wear an ordinary suit when you can wear one that permits a rock-climbing excursion?

Fluid Fabrics

If you’re making the trip to an island, you’ve got to travel in style. Jones’ collection echoes this sentiment and goes one step further. Only the most exquisite fabrics have been selected to both ensure the wearer’s comfort, and also to give the illusion that the material was ‘travelling’ around the body; lightweight jackets floated down the catwalk, printed shirts were veiled in organza, and silk suits clung to the skin like water.
