New Noise: Sophia Somajo

Sitting down with the Swedish songwriter.

Chances are you’ve probably heard Sophia Somajo’s music without even realising it. The Swedish singer/songwriter, who prefers to go by the name of Soso, has been penning songs for pop music’s biggest names under secret pseudonyms for years, and already has two completely self-produced albums under her belt.

Now releasing her newest mini album, Freudian Slip, the stunning songwriter describes the process as “an artistic mistake.. The songs wrote themselves. Often I just improvised over the music I had received, recorded and listened through what I had said in retrospect thinking; wow, that got real… It’s all like a Freudian Slip”. Recruiting the help of several producing powerhouses, the album is a creative and captivating piece of pop music, showing Soso’s unique artistry.

We managed to grab a minute with the songwriting mastermind to find out more.

Hey SoSo, how are you?

Oh, I’m wooonderland thank you!

What’s your go-to shower song?

Always “Phantom Of The Opera”…

What pop stars did you used to want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be Prince. I still do.

Who would you say are your main musical influences?

Black Sabbath, Kate Bush, 2pac, Patti Smith and Prince.

“[When I was younger] I wanted to be Prince. I still do.”

You’ve been penning songs for some of the biggest pop stars around for ages. How did you first get into that?

It started with me getting signed as a teenager but not wanting to perform the (in my opinion) far too mainstream pop we were making, so the songs went to other artists… Very accidental how I got into it really… It was never my mission. But it’s a good hobby.

You released your Freudian Slip mini album earlier this year. What was the inspiration for the album?

I guess life is the inspiration always. My way of dealing with feelings is getting them out of my body and onto paper or in sound. And when other people hear them, I’m liberated from them somehow… Therapy. Make art of the hurt.

Which song are you most excited about?

Smoke is by far my favorite. I normally can’t stand listening to my own music once it’s out, but I love Smoke…

If you could describe the album in three words, what would they be?

#true #mad #deep

What else do you have lined up for this year?

I’m coming over to the States to hang out… Save me some ice cream!
