New Noise: Gangly

Get to know the spine-tingling trio.

Iceland’s hottest new band, Gangly, are about to hit the big time. A hybrid three piece made out of some of Iceland’s most prolific bands, Sindri Már Sigfússon, Jófríður Ákadóttir and Úlfur Alexander Einarsson have already had their first three tracks streamed over a million times.

Getting the seal of approval from Icelandic queen Björk who is, and I quote, “obsessed”, Gangly are set for great things. Currently out on a European tour, we grabbed a minute with them in between their must-see shows to find out more…

How did you all meet?

Reykjavík is a small town with long nights in winter. We’ve been aware of each other for a while through various other projects and came together to work on something organic.

Do you have similar musical tastes?

They intersect and overlap. We’re also different ages so we bring diverse music forward that we wouldn’t otherwise be aware of.

What inspired the name Gangly?

We are Gangly, feeling Gangly.

“We are Gangly, feeling Gangly.”

Can you tell us about your newest track “Whole Again”?

It’s about sheltering a loved one with a broken wing, trying to help them survive.

If you had to describe it in three words to someone, what would you say?

Slow-motion, emotional, dizzy.

You’re currently on a European tour. What’s been your fave moment so far?

Being on a literal and musical journey, as we have done alone many times, but this time travelling together. The shows have all been different and all special in their own way.

What else do you have lined up for this year?

We are planning intimate and special shows, a new piece of video in June, Roskilde Festival and other things that will become apparent in time, very soon hopefully.
