Sportsman is spoiling us today, dropping a new single and announcing his debut album, Neverland, via Best Fit Recordings.
Originally part of soul-pop band The Sonnets, Sportsman, aka Per Magnusson, took a soul-searching expedition to Kenya where he was inspired by the atmosphere to start his solo project. “I wanted to make music that sounded like the scenery in front of me.” he says, “Dark as the looming clouds in the sky, but with the same glowing edges. The name was found on a pack of cigarettes in the sand. Sportsman.”
His new single, “Running On A Beach”, is the perfect example of the exciting things to come. Written in Tanzania, the R&B-tinted track features stunning synths and electronics over a laid-back ambient pop rhythm. Inspired by the hours when you’re halfway between reality and dreaming, the track is elegant and beautiful, showing off Sportsman’s melodic and flawless vocals.
