7 Wonders: Gwen Stefani

We celebrate ‘The Sweet Escape’s’ 10th birthday with a look at some of the electro pop queen’s retro hair moments – eye candy to dye for.

Yep. That’s right. ‘The Sweet Escape’ turns 10 years old today, but don’t fall into a spiraling age crisis. Instead, bask in the knowledge that mini-you experienced one of the most iconic pop albums during its heyday (just think about all of those magical sessions spent belting out the bridge to the title track in the changing room). This second studio album was a key move in the song bird’s career, solidifying her status as a solo artist and our absolute dream babe.

There’s something about Gwen Stefani that’s totally enchanting (aside from the fact that she’s a Grade A hottie and has a seriously sweet pair of pipes). It’s her penchant for performative, whimsical yet always visually arresting style. She’s been experimenting with her looks for the last few decades and let’s face it, fashion is really only fashion if it’s risk taking. Hair has always played a huge role in some of her most iconic looks, from turquoise tootie buns to 90’s braids, our girl has always made a statement. Keep on inspiring us, Ms. Stefani. You are truly a goddess.

The look that defined ’98

The MTV Video Music Awards in 1998 was one to remember, if only for Gwen’s alien, oceanic hair. This was truly THE look of all looks, just one of those things you never really get over, the colour, the shape, the texture. Unreal.

Baby Gwen!

Nice and bleached and silky smooth, we can’t get enough of this flapper-esque bob.

Sugar Sweet (Escape…)

Candy pink glitter corn rows + 5 inch gold hoops. Need we say more? Big thank you to the year 2000 for this.

Cutie Tootie

She’s got a long history of really turning up the heat for the Billboard Music Awards. In ’97 she rocked a head full of with mini tootie buns and her classic brow bindis.

Electric Feel

’99. Rocking a head full of neon pink (esp with a dark red lip) is no small feat but Gwen never backs down from a colour challenge.

Medusa:

Perhaps Gwen is a Greek mythology fan, perhaps she’s not, but the multiple-plait look is definitely enough to stop us in our tracks, just like Medusa’s victims. The Gorgon monster vibes are ALWAYS strong and that skinny arched brow? Priceless ’98 Grammy’s look.

Sweet cyber goth barbie

Just look at that smile and lush bangs – and the highlights that would do Cruella proud. Here’s our girl backstage in ’96 at a No Doubt show in Cali sporting some black and grey streaks.
