Wes Anderson + H&M

Climb aboard the ‘H&M Lines Winter Express’ with their magical holiday advert, directed by Wes Anderson.

It’s hard to watch anything Wes Anderson without feeling compelled to step through the screen and enter the director’s world of rickety old trains and confectionary pastels and he more than delivers with his four-minute H&M holiday advert. True to form, the short stars Anderson favourite Adrien Brody, acting as train conductor turned pseudo Santa Claus, determined to bring festive cheer to his delayed passengers one blistering Christmas Eve, filling the cafeteria compartment with paper chains, lace doilie snow flakes, and even a glittering Christmas tree. The travellers sport cozy yet chic winter wear, ranging from a crisp navy suit to a divine looking pink track suit (complete with fluffy pink ear muffs), silks nighties and boho leather jackets.

Characteristic of the director, the set gives off Art Deco vibes awash in bright Key Lime pie greens, complete with time ellipses and engaging dolly camera movement, pulling the frame from left to right. Tracked by soothing Christmas songs (think the ‘The Little Drummer Boy’ meets John Lennon’s ‘Happy Xmas War Is Over’), the short really captures the peaceful, warm, togetherness feeling of the holiday season in that special Wes Anderson way. Complete sugary-sweet magic.
