For a 22-year-old jazz flautist and electronic producer, song-writer and vocalist, half-English, half-Malaysian Jason Nolan is ahead of the game. His new 6-track debut EP “Wonder Years”, released through Majestic Casual’s label, is a self-produced electronic, emotional journey. Exploring everything from the transition from childhood into young adult to the desire to break away from the norm and take the road less travelled, Nolan’s masterful production and silky vocals take you down a winding emotional road. Above all, it’s about escapism.
Warm and intimate, the EP takes you through Nolan’s journey, where he describes the confusion in the aftermath of a break up in “The Offing”, while other tracks explore the turmoil of choosing to stay put or move to the city and childhood innocence. Born out of Nolan’s time spent alone, “Wonder Years” is full of euphoric climaxes, strong yet laid back vocals and expert beats, with Nolan’s gateway instrument flutes also making appearances. A testament to both his musical and production talents, Nolan’s fusion of his passion for jazz and electronica makes the “Wonder Years EP” a smooth electronic masterpiece.
