LFW: Topshop Unique SS17

Topshop Unique SS17 goes back in time to fashion’s favourite decade.

Take a walk on the wild side

Move over leopard, there’s a new fashion animal in town. Yes, the zebra print stole the show at Topshop Unique SS17, and is here to stay! Coming out as silky shirts, pencil skirts, a super cool oversized bomber jacket, casual t-shirts and even as evening dresses and shoes, the collection made sure that there is a piece of the animal for everyone. Just in case the striking white and black stripes were a bit too out there for some of the more lighthearted, the same print came in black and dark grey on a funnel-neck, sleeveless dress, hinting at the new trend, but camouflaging the wearer enough as to be protected from the carnivorous fashion pack.

The Carrie Diaries

Aside from the head-to-toe animal print, the Topshop Unique SS17 show has a totally 80s vibe. The cigarette trousers, slinky oversized tops tucked into high waistlines, turtlenecks, waistcoat dresses, ultra high slits on PVC vinyl, skin-hugging skirts, mannish suit jackets in tweed, ditsy florals paired with denim and leather, cargo trousers, one shoulder dresses, as well as super sexy sheer ones covered in duct tape, it was all there. Add the pearl shoe straps, the I-washed-my-hair-and-plaited-it-over-night waves and the red eye make up and even the young Carrie Bradshaw would be impressed.

Think Pink

If zebra was too much for some, the Barbie pink might be the final straw. But when worn as tailored trousers and a shirt with a long-line black coat, or even the all pink wool skirt, coat and knitted jumper ensemble with pointy-toe heels in the same hue for good measure, the girly colour looks all grown up and I-mean-business serious. The pink shoes provided a pop of colour on otherwise more subdued looks, too, so no need to panic about going the distance. Though it would appear that many are hungry for the out-there fabrications presented for SS17. As soon as the show was over, a selection of the garments were available to buy right outside the venue (the Old Spitalfields Market could not have been a more fitting place, then) and online. But try buying a piece now, not even 24 hours later, and you will most likely be out of luck.
