NYFW: Lacoste SS17

Relax under the palms in Lacoste SS17.

Loosen Up

This season at Lacoste it’s all about soft lines, slouchy fits and gorgeously comfortable fabrics. It’s nice to see Terry cloth finally making its way out of the bathroom by way of relaxed belted dresses, à la Brigitte Bardot in Jean-Luc Godard’s Contempt (1963). Long may it prosper. Tailoring was relaxed and came in sun bleached, seaside colours inspired by the island of Capri and the coastal Brazilian state of Bahia; if you must wear a suit to the beach these Lacoste offerings would be the obvious choice.

Forever Summer

Felipe Oliviera Baptista has taken all the best elements of long, lazy summer days and created the perfect pieces in which to enjoy them. Simple jersey dresses for the walk to the beach, light seersucker for wine drenched evening meals and a surprising fix of transparent vinyl for those odd rainy days. Harking back to the brand’s beginnings in the tennis world, Baptista has re-imagined the iconic crocodile motif in a childlike scribbled print which added a playful elements to refined sportswear.

Day to Night

Elevating athletic wear into something evening appropriate takes real flair, a flair which the Portuguese creative director evidently possesses in abundance. Although not quite at white tie level, the cinched in waists and exposed shoulders are probably just grown up enough to get away with at a summer party, a contemporary take on Grace Kelly’s dainty evening looks in To Catch a Thief.
