Adidas Originals by Alexander Wang

Alexander Wang serves us all black everything as adidas collaboration drops.

Rumour to reality

At Alexander Wang’s NYFW show on Saturday night, the collaboration which has been a year in the making was finally unveiled. The New York designer and adidas Originals have joined forces to create an 84 (!!!) piece collection; sleek, sporty and entirely monochrome.

Playing on the subtleties between real and fake, Wang has re-imagined counterfeit adidas goods and inverted the infamous logo. “With this collection, the idea was to take the codes and iconography of the adidas Originals brand and look at what their symbols mean and turn them on their head,” Wang told Vogue. Another standout motif of the collection are the non-disclosure agreements printed on the back of hoodies and t-shirts which hint at the fact this collaboration has been rumoured to be in the pipelines for a while, although had not been confirmed by either party until Saturday.

Fries with that?

The show was followed by a launch party-slash-concert at Pier 94 on the Hudson River and included confetti showered performances from Fetty Wap, Juicy J and Travis Scott (and more) and was catered by McDonald’s and Slurpee – and if the thought of Madonna and Nicki Minaj filling up on Big Macs doesn’t make you want to give Wang a big pat on the back then nothing will.

Hit the road

Subverting the urban uniform has always been at the centre of Wang’s designs but the real innovation in this instance is the way the clothes can be shopped. Although the full collection won’t be available until spring, a capsule collection of nine pieces can be purchased from a travelling truck, making its stops first in three New York locations, then globally throughout September. The dates will be announced via social media.
