NYFW: Creatures of the Wind SS17

Shane Gabier and Chris Peters look to women in music to inspire their SS17 collection, Travel Happy.

Shane Gabier and Chris Peters, the duo responsible for the Chicago-born label Creatures of the Wind had done their fair share of traveling over the last couple of months. At the end of June — the 29th to be exact— the two traversed across the pond to put on their Resort 2017 collection runway show in London in collaboration with FarFetch.com. Soon after, the guys packed their bags again and headed for Los Angeles, California to launch their denim capsule collection with LA based retailer Just One Eye. One has to wonder if all this jetting has the guys wanting to show collections out of New York on a more indefinite basis, but the 2011 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Finalist just want to interact their customers the world over. “We have an audience here and an audience there (LA and London), and it gives us and opportunity to explore different ideas,” Peters told me after his show.

“Rock & Roll, female musicians we love and admire and 40s lingerie,” Peters explained to me while interacting with guests of the show backstage as they walked up to congratulation him on a good show were the starting points of this season’s lineup. Most of these ideas were obviously present in the lame silver dresses paired with chunky heeled boots, silk floral frocks and the lace appliqué that decorated the hem of a knee length denim skirts and on the front of a jacket. Wrap skirts, which also happened to be the most successful garment in the Creatures of the Wind line up, layered over slim-fitting knit dresses and cropped wide leg trousers. Other separates, a gingham print two piece suit with lace detailing, the vintage-esque floral print dresses with either white or black lace decorations and the Swarovski crystal adorned coats were a huge hit as well. There were some things, the gray parka, for example, that just didn’t fit it with the rest of the line-up but as a whole, the guys managed to execute a strong showing on the first day of NYFW –maybe taking in their surrounding during their travels was the key to their success.
