Givenchy SS17

Givenchy’s SS17 collection was for the modern macho man.

Modern Macho Man

Mainly tough, partly luxe, Givenchy’s SS17 collection was everything the modern macho man’s wardrobe could possibly need. Held at Paris’s Lycée Janson de Sailly, Givenchy mixed silhouettes that evoked militia ideas with luxe suits and amped-up nylon sportswear. From the flyaway panels at the hips and oversized zippered pockets to the striped black and white luxe suits, Givenchy’s looks covered every eventuality the modern man may find himself in. Givenchy was emphasizing the beauty of modern masculinity, proving that macho-inspired looks can be combined with sportswear and suits to create a unique look that could only be pulled off at Givenchy.

100 Dollar Bill

There were many illuminati hints dropped in the collection’s prints for SS17, as well as obvious influences from Riccardo Tisci’s spiritual research, on which the collection was based. Blown-up American dollar prints were found everywhere from coats to bags, sometimes with multi-coloured gems adorning them, and sat alongside pyramid motifs that cropped up time and time again. Surrealist clouds and eyes also made appearances, with the all-seeing eye referencing both the spiritual influences Tisci looked towards and hinting at the illuminati. Black and white checkerboard prints were abundant, appearing on rain jackets, shirts, trainers and trims.

The Accessories Department

Fitting with the macho man idea, Givenchy’s SS17 accessories were bold and big. Sunglasses decorated with a bright, blood orange strap reading “REALIZE. REAL EYES” were like something out of a spy film, whilst the bulky, almost-boot-like trainers, which came in green and khaki check as well as black, grey and white were broken up with wide straps in black, white and khaki. Headwear consisted of shiny patent bucket hats, and for bags Givenchy presented multiple options: first was a deconstructed backpack, with one compartment on the back, and two wrapping round to be on the front of the body. Second was quite the opposite, and formed of a small, cross-body bag. Camping backpacks were also available for SS17, and came with their own Givenchy roll-up mat.
