Lazy Oaf: Rebel Girl

The new capsule collection from Lazy Oaf embraces early 90s nostalgia.

Bid farewell to fruitless hours attempting to purge 20 years of mustiness from that vintage babydoll. Lazy Oaf founder Gemma Shiel takes inspiration from the early 90s – a little bit of riot grrrl, a little bit of Hole – for latest collection ‘Rebel Girl’, so you’ll be perfectly outfitted for a Revolution Girl Style Now!

Angling for a Courtney Love aesthetic, but can’t quite pull off a tiara? Look to the velvet tees and denim babydolls complete with ‘Baby’ embroidery. For the busy modern gal who’s hankering after DIY vibes but just doesn’t have the time to be accidentally impaling themselves with needles, there are denim dungarees, oversized shirts and jackets all conveniently pre-adorned with suitably angsty patches. And if you’re into bold statements but your manager miiiight object to you striding into the office with ‘INCEST’ Sharpie-d across your cleavage, channel a subtler Kathleen Hanna feel with a slogan ringer tee or two.

Recognise that insubordinate stare in the pastel-hued lookbook? Why, it’s none other than Wonderland fave Julia Campbell-Gillies. Artist, student and sharp thinker – read her take on the male gaze in modelling in her Model Behaviour feature – we think she’s a natural successor to the riot grrrl throne. Julia, if you’re not too busy reshaping the world, fancy helping us perfect our defiant head-tilt? Oh, and to top things off, the lookbook’s shot by Francesca Allen, who’s previously turned her lens to Abra and Tiggs Da Author for Wonderland.

The ‘Rebel Girl’ collection launches today on lazyoaf.com and ASOS, so our plan for the day is pretty clear: a bit of hasty clicking, followed by three hours of screaming to Sleater-Kinney, after which we’re going to pen a few zines then smash the patriarchy. Care to join?
