Telling the story of a heartbroken, gay 22-year-old “too troubled to understand why love is never on his side”, “Lonely Boy” is a refreshingly innovative take on the editorial form. Using video, photography and the framing device of a diary, Daniel Estevez Garcia combines visuals of child-like naivety (unicorn stickers and angsty scrawlings) with the pains of adulthood to create a beautiful and original meditation on isolation and loss. Or, as Daniel himself puts it: “This editorial is about the conversation you wish you’d had. This editorial is about ripping open what you actually think. (Embellished by stickers because tbh adults are still just kids that pretend to understand what’s happening.)” We couldn’t agree more.
Daniel Estevez-Garcia is exploring sexuality and isolation in his new multimedia editorial.
