FESTIVAL GUIDE 2016: MAY/JUNE

Festival season 2016 is nearly upon us. We can feel the wellie burn and taste cider already. Check what’s on in May and June here.

THE GREAT ESCAPE

Cakes Da Killa by Leonn Ward

Cakes Da Killa by Leonn Ward

When: 19th-21st May Where: Brighton What: Somehow, magically, The Great Escape festival weekender manages to cram over 450 artists into roughly 30 venues over three days. Trying to navigate your way round them all when you’re in the full festival spirit (and by that, we mean when you’re drunk) might be tricky but it’s always worth it. This year sees our fave babe Girli play alongside producer wunderkind salute, plus Oh Wonder and Mystery Jets. Head to see Cakes Da Killa for an unparalleled vicious delivery along with between-track jokes.

LOVE SAVES THE DAY

Cakes Da Killa by Leonn Ward

When: 28th-29th May Where: Eastville Park, Bristol What: He’s jus a rascal, Dizzee Rascal. The godfather (arguably) of Grime is headlining the main stage on Saturday. If that’s your kinda vibe, you’ve got Stormzy and Section Boyz to look forward to as well. It looks set to be a full throttle fist-pumping weekend with DJ sets from Chase and Status, Barely Legal and My Nu Leng. Hits, hits, hits.

PRIMAVERA SOUND

Ho99o9 by Brad Elterman

When: 2nd-4th June Where: Barcelona What: Ah, European festivals. They can promise everything that British weekenders just can’t: sunshine. If that’s not enough to get you on the first flight to Barca, then how about sets from the likes of Radiohead, Beach House, Evian Christ, Ho99o9, Last Shadow Puppets and Pusha T. Booking your flights now? Yeah, we thought so.

WE ARE FSTVL

Ho99o9 by Brad Elterman

When: 28th-29th May Where: Upminster, London What: We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, there’s very few reasons we’ll willingly travel to Zone 6 but it just so happens that We Are Fstvl is one of them. For Melé, Monki, Preditah, Kurupt fm (lols), Craig David and Fatboy Slim, you’d be a fool not to follow us.

FIELD DAY

Mabel by Rory DCS

Mabel by Rory DCS

When: 11th June-12th June Where: Victoria Park, London What: The Capital’s favourite weekend festival, if your most loved bands aren’t playing, chances are you’ll see them in the crowd anyway. Anyone’s who’s made a splash in music in the last year will have scored a place on the line-up. Think of it as a yearbook for the coolest kids in music. Our favourites? Dilly Dally, James Blake, Four Tet, Loyle Carner and Mabel. Enough to keep us occupied for a few hours at least.

PARKLIFE

Diplo by Jonnie Craig

Diplo by Jonnie Craig

When: 11th June-12th June Where: Heaton Park, Manchester What: Don’t be fooled by its dance heavy lineup, Parklife has got something for everyone. Twerk ’til you can’t twerk no more to Major Lazer, feel all the “Good Times” vibes at Jamie XX and try to make a cameo on Diplo’s Snapchat for his solo set. But you can also headbang at Wolf Alice and feel all the throwback at Soul II Soul.

GOTTWOOD

Diplo by Jonnie Craig

When: 9th-12th June Where: Anglesey, Wales What: The people behind independent festival, Gottwood, want to get you raving again. Don’t come here expecting folk in the forest, you’re getting DJ set after DJ set. Don’t go for the headliners, we implore you to get lost in the woods and watch someone you’ve never heard of. That’s the whole point.

ISLE OF WIGHT

Diplo by Jonnie Craig

When: 9th-12th June Where: Isle of Wight (funny, that) What: Never thought you’d be able to see Queen, did ya? Well IOW fest are making all your dreams come true with the help of Adam Lambert. This year’s lineup is an all out throwback party featuring Adam Ant, Busted, Buzzcocks, Status Quo and Iggy Pop. The stuff of dreams for anyone who has ever claimed they were “born in the wrong era”.

HIDEOUT

Diplo by Jonnie Craig

When: 26th-30th June Where: Isle of Pag, Croatia What: Ever wondered what Skepta, king of the pristine tracksuit (we often wonder who his dry cleaner is) wears on the beach? Those attending Hideout this year will find out. All the usual summertime dance music hit makers are slotting right back into their places for the festival: think Jamie XX, DJ EZ and Eats Everything. Plus there’s pool and boat parties, you’re not getting that at Glastonbury (unless you count falling over in a puddle), are ya?

WE LOVE GREEN

Savages by David Shama

Savages by David Shama

When: 4th-5th June Where: Bois de Vincennes, Paris What: It’s in the most romantic city in the world, so you should probably take someone cute on a date to We Love Green, right? It’d be the best date ever, get serenaded by PJ Harvey and Kelela and headbang in unison to Savages before you have a couples dance off to Fetty Wap and Floating Points. Is that a thing? It should be.

WILDLIFE

Jorja Smith by Ben Parks

Jorja Smith by Ben Parks

When: 11th-12th June Where: Brighton City Airport What: Last year, Wildlife won the Best New Festival in the UK Festival Awards, so naturally, we’re expecting great things for 2016. For headliners they’ve scooped up all the big names doing the circuit this year, but we’re more interested in the small print. Our favourite little rascal Rat Boy will be making an appearance alongside the heart-achingly beautiful Jorja Smith.
