Newburgh Quarter – Carnaby

Spend a day in one of the West End’s most desirable shopping quarters.

It seems strange that just a mere stroll away from the fast fashion, chain store behemoths of Oxford Street, lies the Newburgh Quarter of Carnaby. As central London’s largest community of independent boutiques, the district really does have it all. Start with a, no-doubt well deserved, pampering session at Pankhurst London, which is a kind of half-speakeasy, half-barbershop where you can enjoy a well selected glass of Single Malt Scotch whilst you get your short back and sides seen to – and maybe even a traditional, straight-razor wet shave if you’re feeling especially indulgent.

Feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, head over to Oi Polloi, the famous internet menswear boutique that recently opened a bricks-n-mortar space in the Newburgh Quarter. Here you’ll find one of the best curated ranges around; there’s heritage classic by way of Penfield and M.H.L. by Margaret Howell, French flavoured goodness courtesy of Arpenteur, as well as clean streetwear from the likes of adidas, Norse Projects and Stone Island. As if that wasn’t enough menswear, the Newburgh quarter also boasts another revered independent retailer in the form of Peckham Rye. Not, as its name misleadingly suggests, located deep in the heart of South-London, but rather a distinctly anti-Peckham curator of handmade scarves, ties and accessories – definitely one for your inner three-piece wearing gentleman who, incidentally, would also appreciate the stand alone Barbour store that’s handsomely stocked with the label’s iconic outerwear.

What shopping trip would be complete without some feasting? Cue Choccywoccydoodah, the eminently eccentric chocolate shop that serves up incredible edible sculptures and bespoke cakes of all shapes and sizes. Go in to gawk at their mad creations, but don’t be surprised if you come out having ordered something special. After all that, you’ll probably want a sit down, so stroll into Antidote and savour a delicious glass of La Distesa, Cupramontana, Marche. If in doubt, ask the sommeliers: they know what they’re talking about. As do we when we say that for a holistic shopping experience like no other, it doesn’t get much better than Newburgh Quarter.
