PFW: Chanel AW16

Everyone got a coveted front row seat to see Chanel’s AW16 collection.

Less Is More

Chanel has become a highlight of the fashion month calendar not only because of the esteemed nature of the house but because of Lagerfeld’s dreamworld sets. So this season, guests were surprised to find no set at all, whether they were impressed or disappointed remains to be seen. All that was in the room was one continuous single row of chairs. At least everyone was front row, right?

Bells and Whistles

Perhaps the notable lack of set was to so not to distract from the heavily embellished collection, Lagerfeld didn’t want us to miss a single of his tricks. It felt traditional Chanel in places, chequered suits, equestrian vibes and tiers and frills as far as the eye could see plus piles and piles of Chanel pearls. But Lagerfeld couldn’t leave it all in the last century, there were cute kitty emoji prints (hey Choupette!) and a shimmer coating wherever possible.

Sugar and Spice

The collection fell most noticeably into two halves through colour. The first was every shade of pink, from magenta through to salmon, pinned in with denim and florals. The second half unfolded into more sensible winter shades. Camel, almost-black-brown, cream and blush pink, there’s no doubt these will appeal to the Chanel customer who will remember nostalgically, the periods Lagerfeld referenced in his collection, but we prefer the pink.
